What drives us?
WHY
Even as the share of afterschool programs offering STEM learning increased in past years, overall participation has fallen precipitously since 2014. Many research studies reveal that specific gender, economic, and geographic inequities to STEM learning in afterschool, reduce the number of young people with access to STEM learning.
These findings are troublesome because the more students participate in STEM learning after school, the more interested they become in Science & Technology. If these inequities in access to afterschool STEM learning opportunities persist, they threaten to exacerbate existing inequities in K-12 STEM education and the skilled workforce (Credit: Afterschool Alliance).
Cost and transportation appear to pose key barriers. Fifty-seven percent of parents said after-school opportunities were too expensive and 53 percent said they weren’t sure how their kids would get to and from activities.
VISION
As artificial intelligence and machine learning emerge, the exposure of computer science to kids is crucial. Exposures to fundamental concepts such as programming and data structures can drive kids to potentially pursue a computer science career and fuel the future of today's world.
